Biography

The son of McCoy McGee and Nancy (Richardson) McGee, John McGee was born in District 14 of Grainger County, Tennessee in 1864.[citation needed] He lived there with his family.[1][2] In 1900, residing alone in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee, in Giles County, John McGee worked as a blacksmith.[3]

John McGee married Lessie C. Woodward (1867-1950), the daughter of James Anderson Woodward and Lemiza Jane Barnes. It's assumed that they had no natural-born children of their own but adopted four children, three of whom may have been Lessie Woodward's children from a previous marriage:

  1. Roy McGee (1890-)
  2. William Brown McGee (1893-1921)
  3. Raymond McGee (1897-)
  4. Charles Eldridge McGee (1919-1941)

In 1910, residing in Civil District 7 of Maury County, John McGee worked as a blacksmith in the phosphate mines, as did Roy McGee, age 20.[4] At the time the 1920 federal census was conducted, John and Lessie McGee lived alone in their home in District 13.[5].By 1930, they had adopted their fourth child; they lived in Maury County's District 7.[6] By 1940, their adopted son, Charles, and his family, lived with John and Lessie in Maury County.[7] At the time the 1940 census was conducted, John McGee did not list an occupation; his son, Charlie, worked at the phosphate mine as a locomotive engineer. Charlie died the next year, after an accident on the mine railway, on September 23,1941, at the age of 22.

By 1950, in their early 80s, John and Lessie were alone again in the household in Maury County.[8] John McGee's wife passed away later in 1950, at the age of 83, and John McGee moved in to Paul Nursing Home.[9]He passed away at Maury County Hospital, at the age of 92.[9] John McGee is buried at Arlington Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee.[10]
