Biography

Zilphia is named in the codicil of William Jacob Manis (bef.1782-aft.1842). She was not named in his will. Other family members have indicated that she had a child Wilson (Frazier) Maness (1839-1926) by Jesse Maness (1790-1846), William's brother. At this genealogical distance, it might be impossible to know if Jesse or William was the father. However, Wilson is listed as simply Wilson Frazier in both the 1850 and 1860 censuss, where he is living with Temperance (Maness) Gunter (aft.1800-aft.1860). Temperance was the sister of William and Jesse.

In the 1840 census Zilpha was in Hawkins, Tennessee, United States. She is on the same page as Riley Manis, William Manis, Polly Frazier, Jesse Manis, John Manis, Willis Manis and Campbell Manis. Thus, it's very clear that she was "close" with the Manis family.^[1]

From William Manas' Will ........."a Codicil thereto, to wit: I do hereby will and bequeath unto Zilphia Frazier 50 acres of land with the present crops thereon, including the premises where she now lives, and also one gray mare and colt.

And I also will and bequeath unto the said Zilphia Frazier six head of cattle, twenty three head of hogs and also all the household stuff with the before mentioned property that she is now in possession of, and also one side saddle and also six bee hives and I also give and bequeath to her the said Zilphia one note of hand on Mark Kenner and Peter Hart for $25.00 and interest thereon."
