Grace Mae Brown was born March 20, 1886 to Frank Browning Brown (1856-1918) and Betsey Minerva (Babcock) Brown (1858-1939), probably in South Otselic, Chenango County, New York. She was the middle child of nine. Grace had moved to Cortland to work at the Gillette Skirt Factory in 1904, where she lived with her sister Ada.
She became involved with the skirt company's owner's nephew, and by early 1906 she was pregnant. The couple planned a trip to the Adirondack area, and that summer they had visited Tupper Lake and Big Moose Lake. It was at the latter stop where she died.
The details surrounding Grace's death have been recounted in numerous stories and dramatizations.
