Biography

Wikidata: Item Q76359306, en:Wikipedia help.gif - Rector of Ayston, later 4th Baronet Fludyer

Henry was born in 1803. He was the son of George Fludyer and Mary Fane.

As a third son he had little prospect of inheriting anything and despite wishing to follow his elder brothers into the military, his father pushed him into a career as a clergyman. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge.

In 1832 Henry married Augusta Borough, daughter of Sir Richard Borough, Bart, and granddaughter of Viscount Lake. They had seven children, of which three died of scarlet fever in childhood:

  • Augusta Mary Fludyer died 1842 in childhood
  • Caroline Fludyer 1835–1842, died in childhood
  • Henry Fludyer 1838–1842, died in childhood
  • Charles Fludyer 1840–1895, married Lucy Hodder in 1866. Rose to Lt Col in the Grenadier Guards and retired in 1876. He died in Camborne, Cornwall where he had mining interests, and was said to have lost a large fortune. He had no children.
  • Katharine Fludyer born 1841, married Henry Randolph Finch Vere Finch
  • Arthur John Fludyer 1844–1922, 5th and last Baronet, married (a different) Augusta Borough, daughter of Sir Edward Richard Borough, his cousin.
  • Henry Fludyer 1847-1919 CVO and Gentleman Usher in Ordinary to Edward VII married Mary Hordern in 1891. He joined the Scots Guards and rose to Command of the Regiment in 1898. He retired in 1903, but from 1914 to 1916 he was in temporary command of the Scots Guards. He died without issue.

For many years he was curate, then from 1834 rector of Thistleton and Ayston in Rutland, England's smallest county (again arranged through his father's influence).

The family lived at Thistleton until the death of his second brother in 1863, whereupon the family seat of Ayston Hall became his. He remained Rector of Ayston but resigned Thistleton.

In 1876 he succeeded as 4th Baronet Fludyer of London (est. 1759 in the Baronetage of Great Britain). He also inherited what remained of the substantial fortune of the 1st Baronet, who was said to be the richest man in England at the time of his death.

His wife, to whom he was reportedly devoted, passed away in 1889.

He passed away in 1896, aged 92. His personal probate was a little under £10,000, having spent substantial resources restoring the church at Ayston in memory of his three deceased children.
