Biography

Daniel Barton was born in Ireland.

Daniel Barton migrated from Ireland to Australia in 1859.

Daniel was the son of Daniel Barton, shoemaker, and Catherine Saddler. He was born about 1853-1855 at St. John's, Limerick City, Ireland. ^[1]

The family came to New South Wales, Australia aboard the Hornet arrived 3 March 1859. Daniel was listed as 6 years old on the passenger log; although he had been listed 3 years old the previous year when the passage was booked. ^[1]

As of 1875, he was a butcher of 5 Athlone Street, Sydney.

In 1878 at Sydney, he married Elizabeth Phoebe Stedwell. ^[2] They had a son Joseph Henry who died in infancy, and a daughter Edith Jane.

In March 1883 he was summonsed to court for failure to maintain his wife. ^[3] No further records for his wife have been found after this.

In 1888-1890, Daniel was admitted to prison. His description was: butcher, born in Ireland, R.C., age 37, 5'5", medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair and eyes. ^[4] The crime was drunkenness outside and inside the Central. ^[5]

He passed away in 1912 and is buried at Rookwood Catholic Cemetery, M1 Row AA Plot 353. ^{[6] [7]}

• Plot 353: Catherine Barton d. 13 Dec 1887.
• Plot 354: Elsie May Barton (d. 9 Apr 1899) and Joseph Barton (d. 4 Jul 1930).
• Plot 356: John Barton (d. 12 Dec 1934).

There is a baptism July 1850 at the correct church to these parents for Daniel. ^[8] Was he actually 9 years old (not 6 or 3 as on the logs)? Another possibility may be the 1850 Daniel died and another Daniel was born later whose baptism has not survived. We also do not have baptisms for Frances and Mary from the log.
