Arvid William Holmquist was born on 6 Oct 1880 in Norra Vram, a village in Bjuv Municipality in southern Sweden near the modern Södra Vrams, in Skåne County, Sweden.[1][2]
William was 29 years old when he arrived in New York from Liverpool aboard the Arabic on 3 May 1910. His arrival records list a "Person in Old Country" as "A Holmgeist," likely his father, living in Billesholm Gt, Sodra Wram; and his uncle, John Spence, was listed as the "Person in US" to meet him in Stillwater, Washington County, Minnesota.[3]
William married Hildur Agda Leander (1886–1945) on 26 Jun 1912 in St Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. They raised their children in Mahtomedi in Lincoln Township, Washington County, Minnesota. William was naturalized as a citizen on 12 Sep 1921 in Stillwater.[4][5][6][7][8]
Arvid William Holmquist and Hildur Agda Leander had the following children:
After arriving in Minnesota, William worked as a carpenter until finding a job as a janitor in the Mahtomedi Public Schools during the 1920s. In 1932, he was elected as vice president of Minneapolis public schools. As the children grew older and more independent, Hildur also found work as a custodian in the public high school.
[9][10][11][12]
Hildur died sometime between 1942 and 1948; after her death, William moved to Seattle, where their younger daughter, Dorothy, lived with her family. On 16 Jul 1948, William departed from New York aboard the S.S. Gripsholm for a 3-month visit to Sweden; he listed his home address as "1119 1st Ave., Seattle, Wash." After his return, he boarded at the Amherst Hotel on 2nd Avenue, where he was listed as widowed and working as a dishwasher in a restaurant.[13][14]
William married Ruth Beatrice (Hart) Stevenson (1885–1975) on 6 Oct 1954 in King County, Washington. They lived in Seattle together, and in 1962, William was manager of the Lorington Apartments at 1107 E Denny Way. They lived in Apartment 7.[15][16]
