Joseph Spangler was born in 1900, a son of Thomas Edmond Spangler (1872–1946) and Ada Biddle (1873–1933). He grew up on the family farm in Buffalo Township, Union County, Pennsylvania.[1], [2]
He married Elsie May Kline (1897-1937) on 21 September 1920 at the Lutheran parsonage in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania.[3] Their children included:
In 1930 they were living in the village of New Berlin, Union County, Pennsylvania. Joe was a laborer for a hardware company.[6]
His wife Elsie died in 1937. In 1939 daughter Ferol married in Virginia.[7] By 1940 he and 10-year-old daughter Barbara had moved to the nearby small town of Mifflinburg in Union County. He had hired a housekeeper, Bessie V. Parker, to help. She had her 14-year-old son, Richard E. Parker, living with them too. Joe was a laborer in the wholesale oil industry.[8]
In 1941, he married his housekeeper, Bessie Viola Mitchell Parker (1901–1986). They lived on 2nd Street in Mifflinburg.[9]
In 1950, the children had all moved out. Joe and Bessie were living alone in Mifflinburg. He was a foreman for a radio cabinet manufacturer. Bessie was working in a silk mill.[10]
Joe passed away in April 1981 from a heart attack at age 80 and was buried in New Berlin Cemetery, New Berlin, Union County, Pennsylvania.[11], [12], [13]
