Like his father before him, he attended Balliol College, Oxford according to "The Book of the Duffs". There are indications elsewhere that he attended both Balliol and Exeter Colleges in Oxford, Future celebrities among the friends of his student years included Oscar Wilde.
He achieved a measure of notability through his activities as a poet, a translator, a critic and a diplomat.
In 1871 Douglas was living in Turriff with his parents and brothers Percival and Julian. The census return confirmed his place of birth as Paris.[1]
