Biography

The daughter of James Monroe Spears (1864-1935) and Amanda Paralee Kilburn (1871-1936), Lillie Spears was born in Pea Ridge, Tennessee[citation needed] in 1896, there residing with her family.[1] She married Matt Polk, a man more than 20 years older, marrying when she was just sixteen years old, on January 1, 1913.[2] They made their home in Lawrence County, Tennessee,[3][4] farming there, and having ten children together:

  1. Thomas Jefferson Polk (1914-1989)
  2. James Hershel Polk (1916-1982)
  3. Lydia Pauline (Polk) Vandiver (1918-2003)
  4. William Otis Polk (1921-1978)
  5. Waymon Winchester (Polk) Story (1923-2006)
  6. Joseph L. Polk (1927-1980)
  7. Dessa Marian (Polk) Boshears (1929-2011)
  8. Opal Odean Polk (1931-1979)
  9. Willis Howard Polk (1934-1997)
  10. Maxie Marie (Polk) White (1938-2011)

Her husband passed away in 1939;[5] By 1940, Lillie Polk was the head of her household in Lawrence County's Civil District 6..[6]

Lillie Polk remarried in 1945, marrying John William LaCroix (1873-1965), more than twenty years older than Lillie. He was the son of Oliver H. Perry LaCroix and Lydia Beasley and the former husband of Mary Alice Hughes (1874-1943), having had eight children with her. Lillie Polk and John LaCroix married in Alabama City, Alabama on December 31, 1945.[7] They made their home in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.[8]

Lillie LaCroix passed away in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee[9] at the age of 83 and is buried with her first husband at Houser Cemetery in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.[10]
