Biography

Ann or Hannah Withington was born about 1853 in Prees, Shropshire, England.[1][2] Throughout her life she appears to have adopted a number of different forenames, but tended to retain variants of Ann as a middle name.

She was baptized as Mary Anna on 31 July 1859 at St Chad's Parish Church, Prees, Shropshire.[3] Her mother is Elizabeth, a spinster, and no father is recorded. Her address is given as Layton Street (but this may actually be Lacon Street: see below).

In 1861, she was living with her grandparents, and her mother Elizabeth is also living there:

  • Hannah Withington, Lacon Street, Prees, Wem, Shropshire, Granddaughter, Scholar aged 7. Birthplace Prees, Shropshire. (1861 Census)[4]

In 1871 she was a domestic servant of John and Jane Roberts:

  • Hannah Withington, Prees Wood, Prees, Wem, Shropshire, Servant aged 17. Birthplace Prees, Shropshire. (1871 Census)[5]

In 1881 she married Peter McDonald in St Mary's Church, Manchester, but the marriage record shows her name as Elizabeth A Withington.[6][7]

In 1891 she and Peter were living in Salford, but she had changed her name to Sarah Ann:

  • Ford Street, Salford, Lancashire. Sarah A McDonald, Wife, aged 36, birthplace Whitchurch, Shropshire. (1891 Census)[8]

Sarah Ann and Peter had three children:

Sarah Ann passed away in about 1896.[13] Peter remarried the same year.[14]
