Biography

Margaret (Mott) Hensarling was born in MIssissippi.

Linnie^[1] was the daughter of Thomas Leonard Mott. She married Thomas Hensarling (1827-1905) on January 27th, 1848. Together they had nine children, all born after their migration to Angelina County, Texas.

Linnie and her family were the first of the Hensarlings to come to Texas in the spring of 1852, traveling by way of covered wagons, according to Selma Shambaugh Garrett, a descendant of Lewis Hensarling. Before leaving Mississippi, they sold property and began buying what they ^[2] would need for their journey: wagons, teams of oxen, food, clothes and other necessary supplies. The women even brought cuttings of their favorite plants to replant in their new home, Angelina County, Texas. Garrett wrote, “The area that was settled by the Hensarlings, the Motts, the Runnels, the Davises, the Parkers and others, was called the Mississippi settlement. When the post office was established August 7, 1871, the name became Mott, Texas. Then after it was discontinued January 27, 1921, the community [was] known as Concord.” ^[3] Today, the town no longer exists.

In 1962, the waters of the Angelina River were released over the town of Concord to form the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. The small town had fought the U.S. Corps of Engineers to save Concord from being destroyed, but, as Bob Bowman writes, “In the end, they gave up and watched as the dam builders pulled down their log houses, destroyed their school, moved their church, dug up the bodies of their ancestors in Concord Cemetery, and finally rolled behemoth tree crushers into the community to flatten its last remains.” The journalist was there to witness the release of the waters and wrote that the people wept over the loss of a settlement that their forefathers had founded nearly 100 years earlier. ^[4]

The family moved to Madison County, Texas before 1900, and Linnie passed away there in 1916 at the age of 81.
