John was born before 1750. John and his brother, Samuel, left England about 1770. They landed in New York, then moved to Charlestown, SC. He sent for his wife and sons from London, and they lived in Charlestown until around 1780, when they moved back to New York. "His loyalty to King George had made him unpopular. He wrote to his wife, "Join me in a flag of truce, bring my effects and my family with you." He engaged in the lumber business, owned a waterfront, 'Bonsall's Wharf," lived in Dey St and belonged to the Church of England. He left a large fortune."
