Biography

James was born in 1840. He married a widow in 1878. In 1884 a daughter died. In 1888 he claimed to be supporting five children under 13. He said he worked at a sawmill for past 26 yrs. His wife stated three children in October the same year at a court case for him threatening her and he claimed she was being unfaithful. Likely they separated in 1888. He passed away in 1905 of a heart attack. He died in Inglewood and the paper stated he had relatives in Auckland. Uncommon name in NZ.

Research Notes

Initially thought he was born Macclesfeild in 1840 and was the son of Charles and Sarah but have since found their son with them in 1871 when NZ one claims to have been here since early 1860's These were the sources for that birth but now looks unlikely to be him

His marriage says Shoemaker but no indications he was, he says he worked at a sawmill....? Only one James Whiston in NZ at the time.

A John Whiston died at 70 in 1886 ^[1].
