Biography
Philip Herbert was a son of James Herbert and Jane Spiller. [1] His birthdate of 1665 is derived from his grave inscription stating that he "departed this life March 12th Anno. 1715/16 in the 51st year of his age." [2]
Philip was named in the Will [3] of his father, Hon James Herbert MP, dated 2 April 1677. He was at that time listed as under age.
He married Mariamne, only daughter of William Finch, Lord Maidstone, who was killed at the naval battle of Sole Bay in 1672. Their marriage produced three daughters: Elizabeth, Mariamne and Frances. Elizabeth married twice: first to Edward Herbert Esq of Glamorgan, who died in 1715, age 22. This marriage had issue one son, Thomas Herbert. Elizabeth married secondly in 1717 to James Jeffreys Esq of St James Westminster. She died in 1718 and was buried 9 November. Daughter Mariamne married druggist Robert Garrard of St Bride's Fleet Street on 31 March 1718. She died at age 25 on 8 January 1723. All four were buried in the West Cloister of Westminster Abbey. Philip Herbert wrote his Will [4] on 3 March 1715/6, styling himself not as "Colonel" but as "Esquire". In it, he was primarily concerned with the marriage articles he had signed the previous year with his son-in-law Edward Herbert, who had since died intestate, having made only one of the agreed annual payments.
Research Notes
Although Philip is regularly referred to as "Colonel" in genealogies, no "Colonel Philip Herbert" appears in the Army Lists of the period 1661-1714. [5] Further research could identify the nature of his military career.
