Research Notes
Surname
The ‘of Wells’ toponymic byname is in common usage but he was probably also known as Troteman.
A single Wells Charter was witnessed by Eddwardus Trotem~ possibly a corruption or abbreviation of Tortesmains which name and variations of it occurred widely in Somerset. Son Hugh of Wells left a legacy to his poor relations in Pilton where one Henry Tortesmains did homage in 1189.
