Biography

Samuel Kettering, 3rd great grandfather, was born October 31, 1808, in Londonderry Township, Lebanon County, Pa. In December 1830, Samuel married Frances Veronica Shenk at Tobar First Reformed Church, Lebanon, Pa. She was born November 4, 1812, in Lebanon County, Pa. In 1844, Samuel and Frances and their six children moved to a farm in South Annville Township. By 1858, the family had increased to include 12 children, all of which lived to maturity. Samuel died on September 4, 1885, age 76, Frances died on April 3, 1887 at 74 years of age.

The May 1863 tax lists shows that Samuel Kettering's tax assessment was $16.98 The 1864 tax assessment increased to $24.00 1866 Tax was $33.45

The 1850 US Census shows the family lived in South Annville Township in Lebanon County Pa. on a farm valued at $9,000. By 1860, the farm vaule had increased to $12,000 and an additional $2,000 personnal estate property is listed. As of 1870, the family owned real estate valued at $36,750 and had a personnel estate valued at $6,500. The value of the family's personnel estate placed the Ketterings in a very good financial position.
