William was born in 1841. He passed away in 1920.
He graduated from Hampton Academy in 1858 and entered the University of Virginia in 1860. When the Civil War began, McCabe left the university and entered military service as a private in the 3rd company of the Richmond Howitzers, an artillery company. Serving throughout the war, rose to the rank of captain. After the Civil War,he opened the University School in Petersburg, Virginia, in October 1865. He operated his school there for 30 years before moving it to Richmond, where he closed it in 1901. McCabe achieved fame as a scholar, author, poet, translator, and editor. He declined the offers of professorships from several universities. He married first Jane Pleasants Harrison Osborne on April 12, 1867,she died in 1912, they had 3 children. He married second Gilleria "Gillie" Armistead Cary on March 16,1915.
