Biography

Dick Townsend was born in the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

Dick Townsend, son of Richard Townsend & Martha Rogers, was born on 9 October 1857 in Gumeracha, Talunga, South Australia. [1]

Dick (son of Richard Townsend, age 24, single) married Ann Nicolson (daughter of James Nicolson, age 20, single) on 28 February 1882 in the Wesleyan Church, Finniss Point, Gilbert, South Australia. [2] Their marriage was reported in the South Australian Register (Adelaide, SA : 1839 - 1900), 1882, March 9, p. 4. [3]

MARRIAGES.
TOWNSEND—NICOLSON. —On the 28th February, at the Wesleyan Chapel, Finniss Point, by the Rev. James Haslem, Dick, second son of Mr. R. Townsend, Mount Torrens, to Ann, third daughter of Mr. James Nicolson, of Finniss Point, Tarlee.

Dick and Ann had 5 children:

  3. Richard James Bruce Townsend, b. 12 Aug 1886

Dick died on 18 December 1927, aged 70 years, in Parkside, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. [4] His death was reported in The Register (Adelaide, SA : 1901 - 1929) Mon 19 Dec 1927 Page 8 [5]

Mr. Dick Townsend, whose death occurred at his residence, Wilkinson road, Parkside, on Sunday, at the age of 70 years, was a native of Mount Torrens, His father, the late Mr. Richard Townsend, sen., was a colonist of 1839, and after a successful visit to Forest Creek diggings in Victoria, became the proprietor of the Mount Torrens flourmill, retiring in 1885, and leasing it to his son, who, after farming and mechanical pursuits at Tarlee and Spalding, took over its management, and worked it for many years. He has left a widow (nee Miss Ann Nicholson, of Tarlee), and one son, Mr. Richard James Bruce Townsend, formerly a prominent playing member of the Norwood Football Club.

He was buried at North Road Cemetery, Nailsworth, Prospect City, South Australia. [6] [7] His memorial reads:
