Biography
Lywelyn o'r Cwmwd ap Hywel Hên ap Cadwgan ap Trahaearn[1]
Llywelyn of Cwmwd was the son of Hywel hen of Castell Madog, who was the son of Cadwgon ap Trahaearn of Llanfrynach.[1] Castell Madog is in Llanfihangel Fechan, Cantref Selyf.[2][3]
Llywelyn had nine daughters, including Lliwwelydd, Alice, Jonet, and three daughters named Elen.[4][5]
Estimated Date: Born about 1295 is based on his wife's birth c1315 and son's birth c1330 (both are also estimates), but he might have been born a decade earlier. At the time in Wales, women had started a family by the time they were 15, but a man of the upper classes did not marry until after he was established, so it was not unusual for the wife to be half her husband's age. See Darrell Wolcott's article, "Generational Gaps and the Welsh Laws".[6]
"Howell ychan ab Hoell ab Eynon Sais" married "one of ye do and heires" of "Llenñ [Llewellyn] ab Hoell hen".[8]
Etifeddes gwraig Hoell ichan oedd Ales vh Llnñ ab Hoell hen o'r Kwmwd.[7] Heiress wife of young Hywel was Ales daughter of Llywelyn son of old Hywel of the Cwmwd.[9]
Generations: Bartrum (Trahaearn Fawr 11) marks Llywelyn as being 8th generation and all his children as 9th, but the husbands for his last two daughters named Elen are marked as 10th and 11th generation, while his other daughters married in the same generation. The implication with three daughters Elen and the last two marrying men in younger generations is that he married three times (with an Elen by each wife - or mistress?).
