Thomas was ordained Deacon on 11 March 1781 through dimissory letters to the Bishop of Lincoln (as he had no degree). He was appointed Curate of Elland Cum Stainland And Fixby, Yorkshire on 12 March 1781 and he was ordained as a priest on 7 July 1782. He was appointed Perpetual Curate of Tottington, Lancashire on 13 August 1799, in which he remained until his death. [2]
