Biography

Eliza was born 11/13/1820 in Maine. Her father was Nathan Chapin and her mother was Mary Loring Wheeler, both from Massachusetts. Eliza married her first husband Levi W. Damon on 3/6/1838 in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1850 Eliza and Levi were living with their children in Lancaster, Massachusetts where Levi was a brickmaker. In 1860 the family was living in the household of GW Burbanks in San Antonio Township, Marin, California where Levi was a laborer. Eliza married Alexander Hodge on 9/3/1876 in Santa Rosa, Sonoma, California. In 1880 and 1900 Alexander and Eliza were living and farming in Santa Rosa. Eliza was widowed in 1909. In 1910 she was living alone in Santa Rosa. She was close friends with Luther Burbank's mother. Eliza died 7/29/1915 and is buried with Alexander in the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery (Plot Rural MC 255).
