Biography

John was born in 1840. He was the son of John Barneby and Susan Elwes. He passed away in 1906.

• In 1864 he changed his family name from "Barneby" to "Barneby Lutley". "Lutley" was a family name from an earlier generation. The reason for the change is not known. Among members of the landed classes in England during the nineteenth century, a frequent motive for such a name change would have been a condition in the will of a rich relative who had died without living direct descendants of his/her own, and who therefore had left property - usually a big house with surrounding parkland and/or farmland - to a more distant kinsman on the express condition that the beneficiary adopt a new family name. Frequently, under those circumstances, the new name was seen to "go with the property".
