John was born in 1742. He was the son of Crewe Chetwood and Ann Holford.
He was educated at Westminster School and entered Trinity College Dublin on 19 May 1758, aged 16. Sch 1760, B.A. 1762, M.A. 1781. [1]
He was ordained Deacon on the 1st, and Priest on 11 June 1762, for the stipendiary cure of Desertmore and Brinny. From 1762 to 1799 he was Treasurer of Ross, and from 1799 to 1814 Vicar Choral of Cork. He was also, from 1767 to 1780, Rector Vicar Scull; and from 1780 to 1790 Precentor of Cork and from 1790 to 1814 Prebendary of Cahirlag or (Rathcoony) (Cork) and Rector Rathconv.
He was of a highly literary turn of mind, yet never published any work.
John married Elizabeth Hamilton, daughter of William Hamilton esq., on 25 October 1769. [2]

He died in 1814 and was buried, by his desire, in Rathcony church-yard.
