Biography

Emma (Bowden) Knight was born in Devon, England.

Early Years

Emma was born about 1855 and her birth was registered between Oct-Dec 1855 at Tiverton, Devon. She was the daughter of Francis Bowden and Maria Taylor Dart.^[1][2]

Emma was the eldest of three children born to Francis and Maria:

• Fanny Bowden, born 1863

In the 1861 census of Bampton, Emma was age 5 and living with her father Francis (30), a victualler at Castle Inn, Castle Street, Bampton, her mother Maria T (30) and her sister Elizabeth (3).^[3]

Marriage & Family

Emma married William Knight on 28 December 1880, the marriage registered between Oct-Dec 1880 at Tiverton, Devon.^[4] The marriage was announced in the Western Times on 31 Dec 1880.^[5]

In the 1891 census of Bampton, Devon, Emma was age 36 and living at Brook Street with her husband William (36) a carpenter and joiner, and son William F (9).^[6]

In the 1901 census of Bampton, Devon, Emma was age 45 and living at Brook Street with her husband William (46), a carpenter, children Frank (19) and Jack (6).^[7]

In the 1911 census of Bampton, Devon, Emma was age 54 and living with her husband William (56), a wheelwright and smith, and son John Leonard (16).^[8]

Emma's husband, William Knight, died aged 57 on 9 March 1912 and was buried on 15 March 1912 at St Michael and All Angels Church graveyard, Bampton, Devon.

Death

Emma died on 7 December 1915, age 60, at her home at 22 Brook Street, Bampton, Devon. She was buried on 11 December 1915 at St Michael and All Angels Church graveyard, Bampton.^[9]

After an illness of eight years, the death of Mrs. Emma Maria Knight, of Brook Street, Bampton, has taken place at her home at the age of 60. Mrs. Knight was a native of Bampton, and was the widow of the late Mr. W. Knight, builder. Much sympathy is extended to her sons Mr. W.F. Knight and Mr. Jack Knight, the latter being at present in the Royal Flying Corps in Egypt. The funeral took place at Bampton Churchyard on Saturday. The mourners were: Mr. W.F. Knight (son); Mrs. W.F. Knight and Mrs. J. Knight (daughters in law); Mrs. J. Cox (sister in law); Mrs. J. Thomas and Miss S. Bowden (cousins); Mr. J. Thomas, Sparkhayne, Mrs. T. Knight, Mrs. H. Sampson and Miss B. Knight. The inscription on the coffin of unpolished oak was “Emma Maria Knight, died 7th December, 1915, aged 60 years.”^[9]
