Charles Bakkemo migrated from Norway to the United States.
Charles was born in 1884 in Bjorslene, Norway.[1] He was the son of Anders Gerhard Pederson Bakkemo and Marthe Marie Kristoffersdotter.
In the 1891 census Charles was a son in Lenvik Prestegjeld, Troms, Norge.[2]
On 14 Jan 1909 in Lenvik, Lenvik Prestegjeld, Troms, Norway, he married (1) Borgine Bertina Augdahl, daughter of Marthin Olsen Augdal.[3] They had 6 children:
Arnold Bakkemo 1910– m. Betty Theresa Siegharter, sons Clyde Robert and Donald Edward
Gladys Leona Bakkemo 1911–1991[4] m. Alvin Otto Seehafer, son Alvin
They emigrated to the United States shortly after their marriage.[10] Their eldest son Arnold was born in Illinois in 1910 according to census information. Their daughter Gladys has a birth record showing she was born in WInnatka, Illinois in February 1911.[11] Charles's brother Audun also emigrated to Illinois and married Jennie Johnson. They both died in December 1918, within 10 days of each other, and the same year as Borgine. Usually when several family members die around the same time, it is indicative of an epidemic disease, and 1918 was around the peak of so-called Spanish Flu.
Borgine passed away in 1918. The six children show up on an 1920 census record as boarders without Charles - or any other adult - on the record.[12]

He married (2) Elizabeth Mathea Johnson, possibly from Sweden, and/or possibly a relative of his sister-in-law Jennie.[13] They had a daughter:
Elsie Lillian Bakkemo 1922[14]-2004 m. John Galloway, daughter Joan
He passed away in 1924.[15] His widow travelled to Norway with Elsie at least twice in the next few years. Five of the six children from his first marriage were boarding with the family of Rasmus Jensen in 1930. By 1940 Elsie and Martha were living together, and over the next decade most of his children married.

↑ It's possible they emigrated earlier, married in Illinois - as some profile information indicates - and the marriage was reported back to Norway and recorded in the local church. It's more likely they emigrated in 1909.
