James was born about 1849, possibly at Old Braidhurst Farm, just north of the Town of Hamilton, on the south bank of the River Clyde at its confluence with the Avon Water, 10 miles (16 km) south-east of the City of Glasgow, Parish of Hamilton, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. He is the son of Agricultural Labourer, Joseph (Millsip) and Eliza (Walker), who married around 1843 in County Armagh, Province of Ulster, in Northern Ireland (taken from their daughter, Mary Jane's, birthplace and date). In 1851, 2-year-old, James "Millsop" lived with his parents Joseph (31) and Eliza (28) and siblings, Mary Jane (7) and Eliza (5) at at Old Braidhurst Farm, just north of the Town of Hamilton, on the south bank of the River Clyde at its confluence with the Avon Water, 10 miles (16 km) south-east of the City of Glasgow, Parish of Hamilton, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland[1]. By 1861, at just 11 years old, James "Millsap" worked as a Labourer in the Iron Works, like his father, Joseph. He lived with parents Joseph and Eliza and siblings Mary Jane (16), Eliza (14), Robert (9), Ann (6), Samuel (3) and Emily (0). Their home was located at Kirk Street, in the Town of Motherwell, Parish of Dalziel, in Lanarkshire, Scotland[2].

James "Millsap" was still at home in 1871 with his parents; siblings Elizabeth (23), Samuel (12), Emily (9), John (6) and Maria (4), as well as his brother-in-law, John (Brooks) and niece and nephew Sarah (3) and James (Brooks) at 88 King Street, in Motherwell. He now was employed as an Iron Puddler at the time[3]. His marriage to Mary Ann Hogg took place on the 24 October 1873 at 17 Parson Street, in the City of Glasgow, on the River Clyde, Glasgow Central District, Lanarkshire, Scotland. At the time of his marriage, he was 24 years old, worked as an Iron Puddler and lived at 5 Turner Street, in Glasgow. Mary Ann, who was 20, worked as a Woollen Power Loom Weaver, and lived at Blochairn Building, Glasgow. They were married after the publishing of Banns by Minister of Townhead, William B. (Turnbull) in front of witnesses Robert (Fuller) and Elisabeth (Hogg)[4]. Nine (9) children were born to the couple during their marriage:--

  1. Joseph Millsip, born 1874 in Glasgow, High Church, Lanarkshire[5];
  2. Samuel Millsip;
  3. James Millsip, born 1878 in Glasgow, Camlachie, Lanarkshire[6];
  4. John Millsip, born 1880 in Glasgow, Camlachie, Lanarkshire[7];
  5. Elizabeth Pearson (Millsip) Nicol, born 1883 in Mothwerwell, Dalziel, Lanarkshire[8];
  6. Annie (Millsip) Allen, born 26 July 1884 in Cumbuslang, Lanarkshire[9];
  7. Robert Millsip, born 1886 in Mothwerwell, Dalziel, Lanarkshire[10];
  8. Mary (Millsip) Wood, born 1889 in Mothwerwell, Dalziel, Lanarkshire[11]; and
  9. William Baird Millsip, born 1892 in Mothwerwell, Dalziel, Lanarkshire[12].

By 1881, now married, James worked as a Steel Furnace Man, living with wife, Mary Ann and children Joseph (7), Samuel (5), James (3) and John (0) at 48 Westerton Place, in the City of Glasgow, District of Camlachie, in Lanarkshire, Scotland[13]. The Millsip Family had moved by 1891 to 133 Windmillhill Street, in the Town of Motherwell, Lanarkshire. James, now a Steelworker, and Mary Ann resided there with children, Steel Works Labourer, Joseph (16); Steel Works Crane Driver, Samuel (14); James (12), John (10), Elizabeth (8), Annie (6), Robert (4) and Mary (1)[14].

In 1901, the family were still living at 133 Windmillhill Street, in Motherwell. James and Mary Ann resided with children, Coal Miner, Samuel (24); Steelworkers, James (22), John (20) and Robert (14); Domestic Servants, Elizabeth (18) and Annie (11); Mary (12) and William (9)[15]. At the age of 61, James now worked as a Wagon Worker in 1911. The family were still at Windmillhill Street and James resided there with wife Mary Ann and children, Steelworkers, John (30) and Robert (24); Mary (21) and William (19), who was also a Wagon Worker[16].

James died on the 22 September 1926, at 3.00 p.m., at the age of 77, at 133 Windmillhill Street, in the Town of Motherwell, Parish of Dalziel, in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The cause of death was Pernicious Anaemia and his son Robert (Millsip) was both present and informant at the death[17]. His burial took place around the 23 September 1926 at the Airbles Road Cemetery, in the Town of Motherwell, Parish of Dalziel, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The inscription on the headstone reads:--Erected By JAMES MILLSIP In Loving Memory of His Wife MARY ANN HOGG Who Died 16th April 1915, Aged 61 Years. His Daughter, MARY MILLSOP Beloved Wife of WILLIAM WOOD, Who Died 18th October 1923, And Their Infant Son, Who Died 18th November 1923. The Above JAMES MILLSIP, Who Died 22nd September 1926, Aged 77 Years. Their Son ROBERT MILLSIP Who Died 9th July 1942, Aged 55 Years. Thy Will Be Done[18].
