John enlisted on 23 Sep 1861 in the United States Army during the Civil War. He joined Company E, 16th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry Color Guard. [1]

Sergeant John P. Willis died on 6 Apr 1862 at Shiloh, Tennessee. He was initially buried in Shiloh Battlefield with a wooden grave marker. He was later reinterred at Shiloh National Cemetery, plot 1817, section Color Guard.[2]
