Gustavus, age 22 (about 1839) enlisted on 18 Aug 1861 in the United States Army during the Civil War. He joined Company B, 20th Regiment, Ohio Infantry. [1]

Corporal Gustavus R. Ayers (aka Ayres) died on 2 May 1862 at Pittsburg Landing, Hardin, Tennessee as a result of disease. He was initially buried in Shiloh Battlefield or hospital cemetery in Tennessee. He was later reinterred at Shiloh National Cemetery, plot 538, section 14th Wisconsin.[2]

In the 1850 census Gustavus (age 14) was in Genoa, Dekalb, Illinois, United States.[3]
