Biography

Daniel O'Neill was born probably at Castlereagh; now part of Belfast, co. Down, about 1612. He was a son of Con O'Neill, Lord of Upper Clandeboye and his wife Eilis O'Neill of Tir Eoghain, (Tyrone), daughter of Art MacBaron Oge O'Neill, neice of Hugh O'Neill, 2nd Earl of Tyrone, and sister of Owen Roe O'Neill [1] & [2] & [3]

His father died in 1619 and a minor he was made a ward of chancery; and sent to England, where he was raised as a protestant. [1]

He was a Captain of Royalist Horse in 1639 and Major in 1640 [3]

He was a Groom of the Royal Bedchamber [3]

He was governor of Trim in 1649 and a Major General then Col of Horse 1660 and Captain of the Royal Horse Guards (the Blues) in 1661. [3]

In 1660 he was granted the wardship of Richard Parsons (then aged about 4 & later 1st Viscount Rosse) on the death of his father Sir William Parsons [4]

1660 he married Katherine Wooten, of Marley, suo jure Countess of Chesterfield, widow of Sir Henry Stanhope, Lord Stanhope, and Jan Polyander van der Kerchhove (Kirkhoven), Lord of Henvliet, Zealand; daughter of Thomas Wooten, 2nd Baron Wooten of Marley, Kent [1] & [3]

From 1662 to 1664 he was MP for St Ives. Noted as of Belsize House, Hampstead, Mdx.[3]

in March 1663 he was granted the very lucrative place of postmaster-general, to which the Stanhope family had an hereditary claim. [3]

He died at Westminster in 1664 and was buried at Boughton Malherbe [1]
