Biography

Charles R. Campbell was born in 1916 in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. His parents were Charles Russell Campbell (1889–1970) and Clara Isabel Locke (1893–1978). He grew up in Lawrence County.^[1] By the time he was a teenager, his family had moved to Edgeworth, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.^[2]

When he registered for the U.S. Military Draft in October 1940, he was working for the Dennison Manufacturing Company and living in Richmond, Virginia. He was described as 6 feet tall, 170 pounds, with hazel eyes and brown hair.^[3], ^[4]

He entered the United States Navy on 2 April 1942 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was in foreign service from 9 April 1943 to 12 September 1945. He rose from the rank of Ensign to Lieutenant. He was discharged on 14 March 1946 at the Naval Base in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.^[5]

While living in Virginia he met and married divorcee Helen Craige Tritton Cooke (1914–1995) on 24 April 1942 in Princess Anne, Virginia.^[6], ^[7]

According to the divorce degree, they had been separated since 25 April 1943, shortly after the Navy sent him overseas. They were divorced on 17 July 1945 in Princess Anne County, two months before he returned from overseas. Helen cited desertion as the cause for the divorce. Unexpected since he was in the Navy when they married and had to go where the Navy sent him.^[8]

He married Ignota Marie Francis (1915–1981) on 24 September 1945. They had met while they were both on military duty in Africa.^[9] Their children included:

In 1950 they was living in New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania with their one-year-old daughter. He was working as a salesman for a paper company.^[10] They later moved to Lewisburg, Union County, where they raised their children.

They later moved to Oregan where he worked as general sales manager for the Mead Corporation. He and Ignota retired to Dunedin, Pinellas County, Florida in 1981. Ignota died shortly thereafter. He again married, this time to Helen Cantonis.^[11]

Charles passed away at age 80 in 1996 in Florida. He was buried with Ignota in Neshannock United Presbyterian Cemetery, New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania (Plot: Row 3).^[12], ^[13], ^[14]
