Biography

P. A. Sawyer, one of the most widely known residents of Sioux City, died yesterday afternoon at his home, 2022 Nebraska street, He was a prominent member of the Woodbury county bar association and was one of the founders of Morning Side college. He represented Woodbury county in the legislature in 1893. He was secretary of state of Maine in 1880. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock at the First Methodist Episcopal church.

Sawyer’s Funeral Today — Lawyers and Lodgemen To Attend Last Rites — Bar To Draft Resolutions — Services Will Take Place at First Methodist Episcopal Church at 2 O’clock - Interment Will Be in Graceland Cemetery — The funeral of P. A. Sawyer, who died Wednesday at his home, 2022 Nebraska street, will be held this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the First Methodist Episcopal church, Seventh and Nebraska streets. No services will be held at the residence. Rev. E. S. Johnson, pastor of the church, assisted by Dr. A. E. Craig, President of Morning Side college, will officiate. Interment will be in Graceland Park cemetery. The honorary pallbearers will be R. H. Brown, John R. Carter, William Milchrist, J. S. Lothrop, T. F. Griffin and Judge David Mould, of the Woodbury and Sioux City Bar associations. The honorary pallbearers were selected by the bar association at the request of Mrs. Sawyer. — The Active Pallbearers — H. W. Johnson, Frank H. Johnson, Donald B. Johnson, F. C. Small and A. P. McKown, of Sioux City, and E. S. Johnson, of Yankton, S. D., will be the active pallbearers. With the exception of Mr. McKown, the pallbearers are relatives of the family. Members of the Woodbury and Sioux City Bar associations and Western Star lodge 282, I. O. O. F., will escort the body to the cemetery. The Odd Fellows will have charge of the service at the grave. The members of the two Bar associations will meet at the courthouse at 1:30 o’clock this afternoon and will march in a body to the church. — Bar Associations Meet — District court work stood still for nearly an hour yesterday afternoon while the Woodbury County Bar association and the Sioux City Bar association, in joint session at the courthouse, appointed committees and made arrangements to show the respect of the associations for Mr. Sawyer. W. G. Sears, John R. Carter and J. P. Shoup were selected to arrange for floral offerings. C. R. Marks, A. O. Wakefield, J. P. Shoup, Foster G. Iddings and J. L. Kennedy were commissioned to draft resolutions on the death of Mr. Sawyer. The resolutions will be presented at 2 o’clock in the open court on November 11, the first day of the next term.
