Biography

Caroline Katherine Lewis was born March 29, 1829 in Blount County, Tennessee, daughter of Henry Hakney Lewis and Keziah Parkins. On June 6, 1848, she married Abner Ellis, Sr. (1828-1883) at New Hope Monthly Meeting Rheatown, Greene County, Tennessee; they had ten known children.

After Abner's death, Caroline and most of her children moved to a large Quaker community at Emporia, Kansas. Her mother, Keziah (Parkins) Lewis Beals, had already moved there in 1875. On July 28, 1891, Caroline married widower Nathan Beals (1824-1893), son of Jacob Beals and his first wife, Sarah Ellis. Keziah became Jacob’s third wife when they married January 1, 1848, also making her Nathan’s stepmother.

Caroline was widowed, again when Nathan Beals died in 1893. He was buried beside his first wife, Lydia (1827-1889), at Fruitland Cemetery, Lyons County, Kansas. After Nathan's death, Caroline Lewis Ellis Beals lived the last four years of her life with her son, William Jay Ellis, in Coolidge, Hamilton County, Kansas where she passed away April 24, 1895 and was buried at Cooldige Cemetery.
