Silas John West, born on May 6, 1828, in Hardin County, Tennessee, was the son of James and Mary West. His early years were spent in Tennessee, where he resided in District 1 of Hardin County in 1850, earning a living as a laborer. During this time, he was married to Rebecca Laxton. By 1860, he had relocated to District 5 of Hardin County, near the Smiths Fork post office.
With the looming onset of the Civil War, Silas West made a move to Arkansas. He enlisted in the Confederate army on November 26, 1861, joining as a private in the 45th Arkansas Militia Infantry Regiment, Company D. Tragedy struck as his wife, Rebecca, passed away around 1868 in Searcy County, Arkansas. Despite this loss, Silas persisted and, by 1870, was living in Bear Creek, Searcy County, Arkansas, near the Marshall post office, sustaining himself through farming.
Around 1870, Silas remarried Mahulda Safrona Treadwell, marking a new chapter in his life. His dedication to farming continued, evident as he lived in Red River Township, Searcy County, Arkansas, in 1880. The turn of the century found him residing in Big Creek Township, Searcy County, Arkansas, and in 1910, he resided on Buffalo Road in Bear Creek Township.
Silas West's life journey came to a close on July 5, 1915, in Searcy County, Arkansas, succumbing to old age. He found his final resting place at Treadwell Cemetery in Baker, Searcy County, Arkansas. Revered as "Uncle Si West," he stood as one of the oldest citizens of Searcy County, remembered for his endurance and presence within the community until his passing.
