Biography

Birth

Lois Bliss was born at Monson, Massachusetts, the daughter of Josiah Bliss and Sarah (Frost) Bliss.^[1] Based on her age at her death from her gravestone, she was born about 1758.^[2] See the Research Note below.

Marriage

Lois Bliss married William Simons.^[3][1] Their first known child was born at Alstead, New Hampshire, on 15 Aug 1775.^[4]

Death

The gravestone of Lois Simons at the Alstead Center Cemetery in Alstead, New Hampshire, says that she died on 18 Dec 1834 in her 77th year.^[2]

Research Note

Lois Simons' FindAGrave memorial, citing no sources, says she was born at Brimfield, Massachusetts, on 6 Apr 1758.^[2] A Lois Bliss was baptized at Brimfield on that date as the daughter of Isaac Bliiss,^[5] and Lois Simons' age at her death computes to a birth date in 1757 or 1758. However, the 1881 Bliss genealogy says that Lois Bliss who married "a Simons of Walpole" was the daughter of Josiah and Sarah (Frost) Bliss of Monson, Massachusetts. It does not give a birth date for her.^[1] An 1826 reference from Alstead, New Hampshire, when Lois was still living there, says that Lois Bliss was from Monson and that William and Lois Simons named their first son Josiah, and that when he died young they named another son Josiah.^[3] Therefore, the weight of the evidence points toward Lois (Bliss) Simons being a daughter of Josiah and Sarah Bliss of Monson, with a birth date in 1757 or 1758.
