Biography

Capt. John Rundle was born 2 October of 1829, the son of Jonathan (1800-1886) and Elizabeth (Butcher) Rundle. He passed away at 9:55 a.m. on 26 May 1903 in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee. He was 73 years, seven months, and 24 days old.[1][2][3] At the time of his death his occupation was given as "printer," his place of birth Maryland, his father's place of birth as England, and is mother's place of birth unknown. John was suffering from uremia, and in a coma when he finally passed. At the time of his death he and Kitty were living at 808 Summer Street, Nashville, Ward 13. His time of residency is given as 35 years (circa 1868). He is buried at Mt. Olivet (sic?) Cemetery (presumed Davidson County.)

Rundle was the young newspaper editor and publisher of the Kanawha Valley Star. He later moved to Tennessee, remarried, and continued to publish and print.

On 12 November 1858 John married Sarah M. Farley in Kanawha.[4][5] They are known to have had a daughter Julia born about 1859 in Virginia.

John married 2nd to Kittie (or Kitty) Sheason of Tennessee on 23 June 1869, close to or on her 29th birthday, in Bradley Tennessee.[6]

DEATH OF CAPTAIN JOHN RUNDLE

::IT is with the profoundest regret that we chronicle the death of Captain John Rundle, who has for so many years printed the JOURNAL. Just when he began printing the JOURNAL we cannot say, but we are sure it was in the early years of its history. Below we give an extract from the Nashville Banner:

"Captain John Rundle, a veteran printer and publisher of this city died at his residence, 808 South Summer street, last night in the 74th year of his age. He had been in failing health for some months, but he was able to continue at his work until a few days ago.
"He was born at Baltimore, Md., and when the civil war broke out, was editor of the Kanawha Valley Star, at Charlestown (sic), West Virginia. He closed up his paper and joined the Confederate army as a privae in a cavalry company. he rose to the rank of Captain, and id valiant service in many of the notable battles of he war. After the war he came to Nashville with his brother J. T. Rundle, and became connected with the Daily Gazette, then conducted by Captain James T. Bell. He later bought an interest in the paper, and continued its publication until it was merged into the Union and American. Captain Rundle then took chage of the job and book printing department, a position he held for quite a number of years, when the Union and American consolidated with the Republican Banner. He then retired from the company, but later embarked in the livery business. This was unprofitable, and he again went into the job printing business, which he conducted up until his death.
"Captain Rundle was a man of genial disposition, kind-hearted to his employees, and many of the old time printers will have occasion to revere his memory for many deeds of kindness shown them by their old employer. He leaves a widow and six children. His children are: Mrs. E. C. (Emma) Tanksley, Mrs. R. D. Stone, T. S., J. W., S. B., and E. B. Rundle, all of this [Nashville]."
A life well spent in the earnest effort to help his fellow man.[7]

Obit from The Tennessean, 27 May 1903, Wednesday, page 7 (Many details which are same as those given in the Nashville Banner are omitted here):

CAPT. JOHN RUNDLE DEAD
Veteran Printer and Soldier Passed Away, Aged 74 Years
Capt. John Rundle, the well-known printer and publisher, died at his residence, 808 South Summer Street, last night, at the age of 74 years. He had been failing for some time from Bright's disease and a complication of disorders, but did not give up until a few days ago.
Capt. Rundle was a native of the old Dominion, and before the civil war was editor and proprietor of the Kanawha Valley Star, published at Charleston, W. Va. When the war broke out he espoused the cause of his native State, and closing up his newspaper office, he joided the Confederate army, and rose rapidly to the rank of Captain of cavalry. he took part in many engagements, notably Fort Donelson, and was always in the thickest of the fight.
After the war Capt. Rundle came to Nashville with his brother, J. T. Rundle, and has resided here ever since. Soon after his arrival he became connected with the Daily Gazette, then conducted by James T. Bell....
In those days the paper had a large book and job printing department, and Capt. Rundle had charge of it....
Deceased was a man of many noble traits of character, with a heart full of the milk of human kindness. he was courageous even to rashness, but not man can say he ever did him a wrong. The funeral arrangements have not been perfected."

Census

John and Sarah M. Rundle appear on the 1860 U. S. Census, Town of Charleston, Kanawha, Virginia with their child Julia and three printers, including Jonathan Rundle. The family seems to be living in downtown Charleston, next door is the attorney Nicholas Fitzhugh, next to Fitzhugh is the merchant Wm. F. Goshorn. Two more houses away is the clerk of the court, Alexander Quarrier.[8]

John and Kitty Rundle appear on the 1870 U. S. Census in Davidson, Tennessee with their children.[9]NOTE: some of this conflicts with other date, but should not be ruled wrong until the correct information is verified. Frenessa may be another child of John's first wife Sarah, as she is too old to be the child of Kitty, unless born out of wedlock to a 16 year old girl. Emma was likewise born prior to the marriage of John and Kitty, but that she is given a born in Tennessee makes her an unlikely candidate for Sarah. UPDATE: Emma was definatley the child of Sarah Farley, meaning that Frenessa was almost certain of that union as well. Given that Emma was born 11 Nov 1867, and Rundle remarried 23 June 1869, Sarah died between these dates.

John and Kittie S. Rundle appear on the 1880 U. S. Census in the 15th District of Davidson, Tennessee. He is mistakenly transcribed as John "Reynolds."

John Reynolds (sic), age 49, printer, born in Tennessee, both parents born in England (wrong on several counts)

Research

Sarah Farley's fate is currently unknown. Is she being conflated with Sarah Mildred Farley who married a Jordon in Roanoke, and who died in 1922?

Rundle's second wife is said to be Katherine "Kittie" Parthenia Shearon, daugher of Thomas William Sharon (1802-1853) and Letitia Harper Brewer (1809-1843), although this has yet to be confirmed by this profile biographer. If so, Katherine was orphaned at the age of 13. Of note, she had a brother named Sterling, after whom we presumed she named her 4th child. We might presume the first child to have been named after her father Thomas.

From the Nashville Banner, 30 Nov 1907, page 7: "Dinner Party. Mr. & Mrs. R. D. Stone entertained Thursday at their home in Sylvan Park with a handsome dinner in honor of Mrs. Stone's mother, Mrs. K. S. Rundle. A color scheme of yellow prevailed in the dining room, which was effectively ornamented with autum leaves and chrysanthemums. An elaborate menue of serveral courses was served and there were present: Mr. & Mrs. J. W. Rundle, Mr. & Mrs. S. B. Rundle, Miss Louise Katherine Rundle, Mr. Ernest Rundle, John W. Rundle, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Stone." [NOTE: "John W. Rundle, Jr." suggests that John Rundle's middle initial was W, something rarely seen in any reports or records pertaining to the Captain.]

By the 1910 Census, Kitty is living with her daughter Eunice Stane in Davidson, Tenn. Rundle is gone from the household and presumed to be deceased.[11]

  • One Rundle appears in the 1849-50 Williams' Cincy. Bus. Dir. "Rundle, J. sawyer, n.s. Front , e. of Depot." Same or close to the address of Jonathan Rundle of 51-52.
  • No Rundles appear in the "1850-1851" Cin. Bus. Dir.
  • Two Rundles appear in the Cincinatti/Hamilton Co. Directory of 1851-52, page 222 [online page 609]. The first is "Jonathan Rundle, n. s. Front e. of depot." Below and adjacent to Jonathan is "John Rundle, printer, 167 Walnut, h. n.s. Front s. of Parsons."[12] KEY: n.s. = north side. e. = east. h. = house. s. = south.
  • One Rundle appears in the 1853 Cincy Directory, pg. 335 [Internet page 180].[13] "Rundle Jonathan, lab. 105 High"
  • One Jona. Rundle appears in Wilsons' in 1854: "Rundle Jona. lab. 81 High Street.
  • In 1855 there is only one Rundle, the "Rundle Jona, watchman of 91 High."

Sterling's death Cert. says that he was retired from "Rundle Printing" at the time of his death in 1961.

There is a Rundle Ave. in Nashville; at which today there is a Pro-Graphic's printing company at 680. Also a Hinton Printing at 580 Rundle Ave. This is a short street, perhaps one or two blocks long. It's believed that Rundle himself lived on this street, as there is a lawsuit which puts him at this address.

From the Nashville Banner, july 4, 1901: "STONE-RUNDLE.

The Church of the Advent was the scene of a very impressive wedding, which was after the manner of the old English ceremonies, at 8 o'clock last night, when Miss Eunice Katherine Rundle and Mr. Ridley Draper Stone were married. The altar was decked in palms, with pink roses, lit up with many waxen tapers, and the white and gold altar cloths were used effectively. The ushers, Messrs. Floyd Reed, Eugene Philpot, Sterling Rundle, and J. R. Minton, seated the audience during a musical programme by Mrs. Albert Bryan. At 8 o'clockl the bridal procession entered, led by he choir boys, siinging "The Voice That Breathed O'er Eden," and followed by bye brid on the arm of her father, Capt. John Rundle. They were met at the alter by the groom... and his best man, Mr. McLester....
The bride wore a gray traveling suit, with white shirt waist, and a gray hat. She is the attractive daughter of Capt. and Mrs. John Rundle and combines sweetness of disposition with wormanly traits of character. The groom is of a prominent family of Bloomington, but is now connected with the lumber interest of this city. The array of handsome presents attested the popularity of the young people. They left on the 9:30 train for Lookout Mountain, and on their return will reside at 110 North High street."

From the Tennessean, 22 April, 1868, Wed. pg 4: "Raffle of the Steck Piano. The celebrated Steck Piano was awarded to John Rundle, foreman of the Gazette Job Office, and Miss Lizzie Smith, conjointly (sic), yesterday, both having thrown "forty four." That no disappointment should result from another raffle they concluded to sell the instrument and divide up the proceeds." Wikipedia on the Steck Piano here:[17]

From the Nashville Banner, 9 Jan 1888, p. 4: The Tennessee Farmer. The Tennessee Farmer, of this city, has been enlarged to sixteen pages and otherwise greatly improved. Capt. John W. Morton and Mr. John Rundle make a strong team, and with the assistance of an able corps of intelligent correspondents - real farmers - they propose to make things "hum" in an agricultural way.

In 1890 Rundle purchased "an entire new outfit of type and material, and offers to do first-class work at low prices. From out long acquaintance with Mr. Rundle," writes the Tennessean, "we can assure our readers that they can rely on having their work done by him with neatness and dispatch."[18]
