Biography

Gabrielle was born about 1863 the first child of Nathaniel Shaler and Sophia Page.

Her father was a volunteer captain in the Union militia 1862-1864 so it's uncertain where the family lived at this point but it is known that he was discharged from service in 1864 whereupon he returned to a lecturing posting at Harvard College and the family lived in Cambridge at that point.

Gabrielle married Willoughby Webb in 1899, in Cambridge. Willoughby was a lawyer. The couple lived in Manhattan, NY. There are no known children in this family.

The 1920 and 1930 Census' show the couple living in West Tisbury, Massechusetts and were living on Gabrielle's parents' summer home The Seven Gates. Willoughby had given up his law practice for health reasons (per obituary) and the couple had moved to the farm in 1908. ^[1]

Gabrielle and Willoughby brought dairy cows to the farm, operating it on Grange principles, marketing the milk as healthful. Later they turned Seven Gates into a land development and it exists today as an institution on Marthas Vineyard. ^{[2] [3]}

Gabriele is found in the [April] 1940 census, a widow, age "72", and a "guest" at the Women's City Club of Boston, 40 Beacon Street, Boston. ^[4]

Gabriel died in 1949 and is buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge near her parents.
