Biography

Goodwin Robert Wiley was born on January 13, 1846, in Bethel, Maine, the son of Dr. Robert Goodwin Wiley and Abigail Barker Twitchell.^[1][2]

Goodwin was a druggist and pharmacist in Bethel.^[1] He married Matilda Olive Swift on October 5, 1869.^[3] They had the following children:^[1]

3. Howard, b. 21 Jan 1876
4. Bertha May, b. 22 Jul 1880
5. Gladys Rose, b. 22 May 1886; m. James H. McClure

He was mentioned by his father in his will dated December 19, 1895.^[4]

Goodwin died on on April 3, 1911, at his home in Shawnee, Oklahoma.^[5][6] He is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Bethel, Maine.^[7]

A telegram was received this Tuesday morning announcing the death in Shawnee, Oklahoma, of Goodwin R. Wiley, formerly of Bethel. Mr. Wiley for many years was a successful druggist in Bethel and held offices of trust. For several years he was postmaster, town clerk, and secretary of the trustees of Gould Academy. He was a prominent Mason and held the second highest office in the Grand Lodge. Mr. Wiley was the son of the late Dr. Robert G. and Abigail Twitchell Wiley, and was born in Bethel, Jan. 13, 1846. In October, 1869, he married Matilda O. Swift, and she with four children survive: Dr. Arthur G. Wiley of Bar Mills, Howard of Shawnee, Okla., Bertha, who resides with her parents, and Gladys, who married Jas. H. McClure of Bangor. With his family Mr. Wiley moved to Oklahoma in 1906, and has been employed in the city government of Shawnee the entire time.
