Biography

Private Edwin Hubbard served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Sept. 10, 1862
Mustered out: July 2, 1863
Side: USA
Regiment(s): 5th Mass. Infantry

Edwin A. Hubbard was born in Sanford, Maine, about 1844, the son of Abram and Marcia (Hubbard) Hubbard. (Based on his age at the time of his death - 32 years - he would have been born about 1835, but census records consistently give an 1844-1845 range for his birth.) He was the youngest of two sons. In 1850, the family lived in York, Maine, where his father was a lumber dealer[1] and by 1855 the family had removed to Somerville, Massachusetts, where his father was a master carpenter.[2]

Edwin was an 18-year-old clerk when he enlisted to serve in the Civil War, on September 10, 1862. He mustered in as a private in Company B of the 5th Mass. Infantry on Sept. 19 of that year. He served a 9-month term and mustered out on July 2, 1863, at Camp Lander in Wenham, Mass.[3]

Edwin died of consumption in 1867. He was 32 years old.[4] He is buried at the family plot of Maple Grove Cemetery in Acton, Maine.[5]
