Biography

Michael Furnell was born in 1758. He was the son of Michael Furnell and Elizabeth Massy.

He lived at Ballyclough, County Limerick, Ireland and at Caherelly, County Limerick, Ireland.

Michael married Mary Stacpoole (the daughter of George Hogan Stacpoole and Jane Lysaght) on 20 August 1791. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 3 of the Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette dated 1 September 1792:

MARRIED. At Lifford, Michael Furnell, of Ballyclough, efq; to Mifs Stacpoole, eldeft daughter of George Stacpoole, efq.^[1]

In 1792 at Friarstown, County Limerick, Ireland, he shot and mortally wounded Captain Henry Vereker in a duel. A brief account of the incident was printed on page 2 of the Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette dated 12 April 1792 (note his name is intentionally blanked in the newspaper report):

Monday fe'nnight a meeting took place near Limerick, between Henry Vereker, and M—- F—nell, efqrs . The only fhot fired unfortunately took its direction through the body of Mr. V. whofe death is universally regretted. He was nephew to Prendergaft Smith, efq; M.P. for Limerick, and prefumptive heir to his large fortune.^[2]

He held the offices of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) in 1793 and High Sheriff for County Limerick in 1795.

He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County Clare in 1801.

Michael Furnell passed away on 14 January 1816. Notice of his death was printed o page 3 of the London Chronicle dated 31 January 1816:

The Ennis Chronicle on Saturday has the following paragraph - the Limerick papers have not copied it - the motives are obvious:- "Died suddenly, at his house, Cornwallis -street, Limerick, MICHAEL FURNELL, of Ballyseeda, Esq. He was formerly a banker in Limerick, and served the office of High Sheriff of the county Limerick ; his remains were yesterday interred at Cahirelly.- (Dublin Paper.)^[3]
