Biography

Martha was born on January 13, 1770 in Machias, Massachusetts (Maine after 1820). She was a daughter of Job Burnham and Mary (O'Brien) Burnham.^[1]

She had two children, George in 1790 and Henry in 1793. They were both baptized in Machias. The father's name is not listed on either baptism record.

Martha married John Holmes on April 19, 1798 in Machias. They had at least three more children. At least one the older boys also seems to have adopted John's surname as Henry was recorded as "Henry Burhnam Holmes" in later records.

She and her husband were still living in 1850, residing with their son John and in their seventies.
