Biography

Nellie was born in 1887. She was the daughter of John Hendricks and Lucinda Gower. She grew up in Topeka, Kansas.

She married William Adelmore Cloud on 5 Mar 1904.^[1] In August 1911, William deserted Nellie and their children and went to Colorado Springs, Colorado. Nellie filed a complaint, and William was arrested under a new law that made it a felony to desert a wife and family that needed support. He was extradited and brought back to Topeka.^[2] He was the first man from Shawnee County to be prosecuted under the law.^[3] William gave a bond and promised to be good, but he did not pay Nellie the required allowance, so he was sent to jail. Nellie wanted him to be released; she said that he had a good job and was ready to work.^[4] In November 1912, Nellie filed for divorce and custody of their three children because William would not provide for her, and he had mortgaged their household furniture to obtain money so he could buy liquor.^[5][6] Nellie was granted a divorce on 12 December 1912.^[7]

Sometime between 1920 and 1925, she married Orson W. Knight.^[8]

She passed away on 22 December 1967 at the Hot Springs Nursing Home in Hot Springs, Arkansas.^[9]
