Biography

Grace was born at Stacyville, Maine in 1879, the daughter of Josiah Bates Bragg (1847-1888) and Carrie Frances Elliott (1856-897).

She married Harry Leon Leavitt at Island Falls, Penobscot County, Maine on 1 October 1898. Their marriage record shows they were both residents of Stacyville, Maine and it was a first marriage for both. Harry was age 22 and employed as a painter; Grace was age 19 and employed as a domestic. They filed a marriage intention on 25 September 1898 and were married by Z.M. Miller, Island Falls clergyman. They were the parents of nine known children.

Grace passed away in 1962 and is buried at the Sherman Mills Cemetery, Sherman Station, Maine.

Grace Leavitt

Patten- Mrs. Grace Leavitt, 82, wife of Harry Leavitt, died at a local nursing home Tuesday afternoon after a long illness.

She was born at Stacyville August 1, 1879, daughter of Joseph [sic] and Carrie (Elliott) Bragg.

Her parents were among the original settlers of Braggville, the section of town now known as Sherman Station. She could recall many events of the early life of the town, including the building of the Bangor and Aroostook Railway, the first train passing through town and the great forest fire of the early 1900's which lay waste the greater part of Braggville. More than sixty years ago she married Harry Leavitt and most of their life was spent in Stacyville.

She is survived by Mr. Leavitt; six sons, Adelfred, Odber, Steadman, and Ardel all of Sherman Station, Fremont of Patten and Woodrow of Plainsville [sic], Conn.; two daughters, Mrs. Vivian Townsend, and Mrs. Margaret Markey of Mattawamkeag.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the home of Fremont Leavitt, 60 Gardner Street, Patten, the Rev. Vaughn McKinney, pastor of the Baptist Church is Sherman Station, officiating. Friends may call at the residence after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
