Chase County Historical Sketches, Vol. I E. A. ALFORD FAMILY By Carrie Breese Chandler The census of Chase Co., Kansas Territory of 1860, contains the names of E. A. Alford, age 32, his wife, Harriet Yeager Alford Tildren were born in Kansas: Belle, Taney and George. The Alfords came from Marshall, Iowa, where Mr. Alford had been postmaster and where his three oldest children were born. He settled on Rock creek, Bazaar township, and in the affairs of the new county of Chase soon took a prominent part.

He was on an early board of county commissioners; then when statehood came and the Civil war was at hand was elected First Lieutenant of the "Skirmishers." His commission signed by the first state governor, Charles Robinson, bears the date July 18, 1861. He was representative from Chase County in the State Legislature in 1863. School District No. 7, Bazaar, was organized at his house December 14, 1861.

Mr. Alford was born in Connecticut and was a graduate of Yale College. He died in 1866 and was buried in the old pioneer burying ground northeast of Bazaar on what is now the Titus place [this referred to the original townsite, not the 1887 current townsite]. His daughter Cora who died in childhood was also buried there. Mrs. Alford later married Rev. Charles Manley, a Baptist preacher. They had one daughter, Gertrude (Sipes) now of Wichita.

Arlia Alford married Perry Manley, Belle married J. M. Morrison and went to Colorado, where George also lives. Frank also married Mary Upton of Chase County November 25, 1880 and for many years they made their home on the old Alford farm near Bazaar, then moved to Cottonwood Falls where he was in business a long time, and where Mrs. Alford still lives. He was a pillar in the Methodist church and a man of much uprightness and distinction. He died July 8, 1927.

With the Ephraim Alfords came to Kansas Territory in 1859, Mrs. Alford's brother, George Yeager, age 22, and her sister, Ann Yeager, age 19.

Ann Yeager taught a subscription school in the Bazaar neighborhood in 1860, the first school in that part of the county. She married Lucius Manley. George Yeager married Annie Catherine Roger in 1864. They made their home on Rock creek, Bazaar township for the rest of their lives. It was a home noted for kindliness and hospitality. Their family consisted of four sons, William, George, Charles and Frank.
