Royal R. Walter was born in December 1894. His parents were John R. Walter (1864–1953) and Emma Elizabeth Miller (1865–1954). He grew up on the family farm in Buffalo Township, Union County, Pennsylvania.[1]
When he registered for the U.S. military draft in 1917, he was described as tall and slender with blue eyes and black hair. He was working on his father's farm.[2]
He married Mary Elizabeth Bolig (1898-1944) on 20 December 1923 at the Reformed Church's parsonage in New Berlin, Union County. They set up their home on his father's farm where they would live the rest of their lives.[3], [4] Their children included:
In 1930 Royal and Mary owned their farm outside of Lewisburg on New Berlin Mountain Road in Buffalo Township, Union County, Pennsylvania. They had 3 children under the age of 5.[5] In 1940 with the children between ages 10-14, they were all still on that family farm.[6]
His wife died in 1944. In 1950 Roy and his younger daughter, Mary, were living together on the farm. He said he was working 80 hours a week.[7]
Royal passed away in December 1979, three days after his 85th birthday. He was buried with Mary in Dreisbach United Church of Christ Cemetery, Lewisburg, Union County, Pennsylvania.[8], [9]
