Biography

John was born in 1809.

He married Phoebe Howlett, and migrated to New Zealand in 1842 aboard the Birman, on a free immigrant passage, with their six children[1]

  • Alfred Monk The death occurred on Sunday evening of another of the Otaki district's pioneers, in the person of Mr. Alfred Monk. Deceased was the third son of Mr. John Monk (who came to New Zealand in1842), and was born sixty-nine years ago in Wellington. Four brothers and two sisters are still living. Three of the former reside at Makara, Mangatainoka, and Halcombe, respectively, while Mrs Thos. Smith (Palmerston), and Mrs Scholes (Manakau) are sisters.
