Bledsoe History: George Bledsoe came to America in 1652 at age 17. First recorded William Bletsoe, was born in 1607 in England. It is said,Ellis Island in New York Harbor was originally named Bledsoe Island and was given to the family by George Washington for their assistance in the war. The family members were known as part of the long guns men, who were noted as great soldiers using the long rifle. A theory on the origin of the Bledsoes is that they were of Danish descent. Bletsoes have been members of the aristocracy; there is a Bletsoe Castle as well as a Bledsoe Coat of Arms. In 1612 William Bletsoe completed Bletsoe castle, located north of Bedford England. Bedford was a Danish military center in England in the Middle Ages. Bletsoe castle was the birthplace of Margaret of Beaufort the grandmother of Henry VIII. We are 22 degrees from William Brewster (came over on Mayflower), and 25 degrees from Queen Victoria.
