Layton (Pete) Swingle, 82, a resident of the Waymart area most of his life, died Saturday at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Laverne Polvado, in 1970, and his second wife, the former Anna Stacknow, in 2005. Born in South Canaan, son of the late Albert and Susie Lamberton Swingle, he was an Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving his country from 1945 to 1956. Before retiring, he was a self-employed heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Waymart Lodge 542 Free and Accepted Masons and a lifetime member of Honesdale VFW Post 531. Surviving are two sons, Thomas and Tracy Swingle, both of Texas; two sisters, Marge Bianchi, South Canaan; and Glenna Rollison, Waymart; three step-children, William Corrigan and Beatrice Sharrock, both of New York; and Jim Touchstone, Texas; two uncles, William Lamberton, Lake Ariel; and Raymond Lamberton, Bethlehem; an aunt, Ruth Cole, New York; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Friend (Bud), Grant, Tracy, and Nathan Swingle; four sisters, Alberta Horst, Lois Gustock, Margaret (Maggie) King and Beverly Swingle; and a stepson, Joe Touchstone. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Jenkins Funeral Home, 269 Belmont St., Waymart, with services by the Rev. William Rushik, pastor of the South Canaan Free Methodist Church. Interment, East Canaan Cemetery.
