Biography
George was born before 1849. George Ward ... He passed away in 1866.
He and Mary Ann married in Monkwearmouth on 28 August 1865. He continued to suffer ill health; he died in October 1866 after a long illness characterised by paralysis and intestinal problems. The attending doctor later gave evidence that Ward had been very ill, yet he had been surprised that the man's death was so sudden. Once again, Mary Ann collected insurance money from her husband's death.[1]
Cause of death noted as "English cholera and typhoid fever".[2] It is interesting to note that typhoid and typhus fever were often used interchangeably despite being two separate illness.[2]
After his death, Mary Ann married again but used her previous married name of Mary Ann Mowbray, as if her marriage to Ward had never existed.[3]
The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.
↑HSW Podcast: Hosts discuss the peculiarity of Mary Ann's brief marriage to George Ward, having met him while working in the hospital where he already suffered from ill health, They also comment on her marriage to James Robinson and her use of the name Mowbray at that time.
