Biography

John B. Quick

Bio info from Jerry Semprevio:

John B. Quick, the son of Petrus Quick and Hannah DeWitt, was born in Milford PA in 1779. He settled on the family homestead and engaged in farming, lumbering, and hotel keeping. In 1820 he built an inn near the junction of the Old Milford Road and the road to Port Jervis located about two and a half miles east of Milford. The inn was called The Half Way House, and was a rest stop for the stage, carriage, and wagon trade between Milford, Pennsylvania and Port Jervis, New York. It was sold in 1875 to James Cummins and eventually fell into disrepair. The ruins of the inn were obliterated when Interstate 84 was built in 1969.

John B. also ventured into the developement of the anthracite coal lands at Hyde Park in Luzerne County, Penna. where he bought 1200 acres in 1824. He also had a part in the developement of a railroad; to bring rail lines from Port Jervis to Milford and then on to Stroudsburg. Tracks were laid along the Old Milford Road as far as Buttermilk Falls. The company ran out of rail, and got sidetracked into stone crushing and the shale hauling business. The railroad had trouble paying their taxes and collapsed.

John B. married Diana Rosenkrantz, who was of Dutch descent, in 1805 and lived in Milford. John B. and Diana had six children together: Jacob R. (b-1806); Martin Cole (b-1808); Maria Amelia (b-1810); Peter A.L. (b-1819); Hanna Smith (b-Unknown); and James R. (b-Unknown).

John was a Democrat and a member of the Presbyterian Church. He spent his last years at Schocopee, located just outside of Milford.

When it was thought the Tocks Island Dam would be built, a number of public notices went into newspapers to locate next of kin for people interred on land the dam would put underwater. [This dam was put off, and the acquired land was stripped of artifacts and turned into park land...much history was lost. Quick-803 20:45, 22 May 2014 (EDT)]
