The Herker Family
Joseph Herker, with his parents and seven brothers and sisters, homesteaded north of Doland, when South Dakota was still a territory. All 10 of them lived in a sod house and grew to adulthood in that area.
About the same time Carrie Mae Butler arrived in South Dakota from Wisconsin with her father and stepmother. They also homesteaded north of Doland. Mae, as she was most frequently called, grew to womanhood in that area. In September 1897, Joe and Mae (Butler) were married in Redfield.
In 1905, they moved to Doland where Joe ran a dray, and his well kept horses were a familiar sight on main street. He continued in that work until he passed away in 1941 at the age of 72.
Carrie Mae remained in her home until a year prior to her death in 1964 at the age of 85.
Joe and Mae had 6 children---Alvira (Feeney), Vern, Eva (Lake), Elva (who died in infancy), Virgil, and Viola (Danks). All are now deceased, except Viola, who currently resides in Lake Andes, S.D.
Alvira had no children. Vern's 6 daughters and 6 sons are scattered around the country. Eva's son, Lester, lived in Doland until his untimely death in a truck accident. Her daughter, LaVonne Filipek, resides in Rapid City. Virgils son Larry is in Michigan. Viola has 3 children in California and 1 in Montana.
Of the dozens of great grandchildren, Lester's son, Danny Lake and wife Deanna and their 2 children are the only descendants still living id Doland. Danny owns and operates the Doland Hardware.
